By Christina Carpio, Front Desk Coordinator & Special Projects Manager

When I started working at Chuback Vein Center over three and a half years ago, I never imagined just how dynamic and rewarding my role would be. As the Front Desk Coordinator and Special Projects Manager, I get to be both the welcoming face of our office and a creative force behind the scenes helping shape new initiatives, campaigns, and experiences.

Have you noticed small red or blue veins just under your skin—or larger veins that bulge and twist down your legs? These are spider veins and varicose veins, and while many people think they’re just cosmetic, they can actually signal an underlying health issue with your veins.

At Chuback Vein Center, we believe education is the first step to empowerment. This guide will help you understand the causes, symptoms, and treatment options available, so you can make informed choices about your vein health.

What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are small, thin blood vessels that appear near the surface of the skin. They often form red, blue, or purple web-like patterns—usually on the legs or face.

Common Causes:

  • Genetics
  • Hormonal shifts (pregnancy, menopause)
  • Prolonged standing or sitting
  • Sun exposure (especially on the face)

Though spider veins are usually painless, they may signal early venous insufficiency. That’s why treating them isn’t just about appearance, it’s about supporting your overall vascular health.

What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are larger, rope-like veins that bulge or twist beneath the skin, most often on the legs. Unlike spider veins, varicose veins frequently come with discomfort or other symptoms, and can worsen over time if left untreated.

Symptoms May Include:

  • Heaviness or aching in the legs
  • Swelling, especially after standing
  • Itching, burning, or restlessness
  • Cramping at night
  • Skin discoloration or texture changes

Varicose veins result from chronic venous insufficiency, a condition where vein valves malfunction and blood pools in the veins. Left untreated, this can lead to complications like skin breakdown, ulcers, or blood clots.

Why Do Vein Issues Occur?

Spider and varicose veins often stem from poor circulation due to weakened or damaged vein valves. Several factors can increase your risk:

  • Family history
  • Aging
  • Pregnancy or hormonal changes
  • Sedentary lifestyle or prolonged standing
  • Obesity
  • Previous leg trauma or blood clots

Proven Treatment Options at Chuback Vein Center

You don’t have to live with uncomfortable or unsightly veins. At Chuback Vein Center, we offer safe, minimally invasive treatments tailored to your needs—with little to no downtime.

Sclerotherapy

Best for: Spider veins and small varicose veins
A tried-and-true treatment, sclerotherapy involves injecting a specialized solution into the problem veins. This causes them to collapse and fade over time. It’s quick, effective, and requires no anesthesia.

Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)

Best for: Large varicose veins due to venous insufficiency
This procedure uses laser energy to close off the damaged vein from the inside. A small fiber is inserted through the skin and guided into the vein using ultrasound. The vein is sealed shut, and blood naturally reroutes to healthier veins. Most patients are back to their routine the same day.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

Best for: Bulging varicose veins near the skin’s surface
In this minor surgical procedure, affected veins are removed through tiny punctures in the skin. It’s done under local anesthesia, and the incisions are so small that stitches usually aren’t necessary. Recovery is quick, and results are immediate and dramatic.

Varithena

Best for: Varicose veins above and below the knee
Varithena is a foam-based, FDA-approved medication injected directly into the diseased vein. The microfoam fills and collapses the vein, allowing blood to reroute through healthier pathways. It’s a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure performed in-office with no need for incisions or stitches, and patients typically return to normal activity quickly.

Each option is backed by clinical research and performed by our experienced vein specialists in our Paramus office.

Quick Quiz: Do You Have Symptoms of Vein Disease?

Answer yes or no:

  • Do you have bulging, twisted, or visible veins on your legs?
  • Do your legs ache, feel heavy, or swell—especially at the end of the day?
  • Do you experience burning, itching, or restlessness in your legs?
  • Do you avoid wearing certain clothes because of your veins?
  • Do you have a family history of vein issues?

If you answered “yes” to one or more, you could be dealing with venous insufficiency. We recommend scheduling a consultation to get a professional evaluation.
