What Is Laser Vein Treatment?

effective and high tech

paramus laser vein treatment model

Laser vein treatment — also called “endovenous laser treatment” or “EVLT” — is an effective and high tech way to treat varicose and spider veins. Developed over decades to treat other health conditions, laser treatments are now available to precisely target the veins that are causing you discomfort. As we age, gain weight, or experience other bodily changes, our veins can sometimes fail to properly transport blood to our hearts.

When this happens, blood pools in our veins, causing swelling, pain, lines, or discolored regions on our skin. These problems can sometimes be addressed through lifestyle changes or supplements, but persistent problem areas often require more aggressive treatment methods. EVLT employs highly-targeted light energy to target problem veins under the skin. Typically, an ultrasound is used to precisely map out the trouble spots. Then, a small catheter equipped with a tiny laser is inserted under the skin. This laser fires short, controlled bursts of energy to close the veins. The body then reroutes blood through nearby healthy veins, and the dysfunctional vein is reabsorbed.

What are the Benefits of Laser Vein Treatment?

the right choice

Laser vein treatment is the most recent addition to your arsenal of options for treating vein issues. If you suffer from unsightly or painful veins due to varicose veins, spider veins, or other forms of vein disease, EVLT may be the right choice for you.

Because it is a minimally invasive procedure, treatments usually take under an hour to complete. Only a mild, local anesthetic is needed, so most Paramus laser vein treatment patients can resume their normal activities on the same day. Laser vein treatment has proven to be effective and has a very low risk of severe side effects. During your consultation for laser vein treatment Paramus vein doctor, John A. Chuback at Chuback Vein Center, or one of our experienced vascular specialists will take the time to listen closely to your desired outcomes and concerns and then help you decide on the right treatment option for you.

Am I a Candidate for Laser Vein Treatment?

If you’re in good health overall, EVLT may be a good treatment for you. Ideal candidates have usually explored other, non-invasive remedies, but their venous insufficiency persists. Still, a willingness and commitment to follow your specialist’s advice is critical to have the highest chance of a positive result. Your vascular specialist will thoroughly cover your complete medical history during your consultation to look for any underlying conditions that may require other interventions.

The Laser Vein Treatment Procedure

state-of-the-art facility

All of the procedures we perform at Chuback Vein Center are done as same day procedures at our state-of-the-art facility conveniently located in Paramus, New Jersey. Prior to the date of your treatment, we will prepare you with all the details of your procedure and give you instructions on how to best prepare for your treatment.

Some of those instructions may include modifying or pausing the use of any blood-thinning medications, including aspirin, ibuprofen, and some supplements. Doing so is recommended to reduce the risk of excess bleeding during the operation. It is also recommended that you wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothes to your treatment as your skin may be more sensitive afterward. On the day of your procedure, you’ll be escorted into the treatment room and seated comfortably on a reclining chair with your legs elevated.

The skin in the region to be treated will be washed and disinfected to minimize the risk of infection. The doctor will begin by applying an anesthetic gel to the targeted area for the ultrasound. This step is painless and is necessary to map and precisely locate the veins to be treated accurately. Using ultrasound as a guide, Dr. Chuback will insert a small catheter with a tiny laser attached to it into the targeted vein. The laser will emit short, controlled bursts of energy directly to the dysfunctional vein, causing it to close. Once the laser procedure is complete, the catheter is slowly removed, the insertion site is sterilized and bandaged, and a compression device is usually applied. Depending on the scope of your treatment plan, this procedure may be repeated as necessary on other veins.

Laser Vein Treatment Recovery

Recovery from EVLT is considered relatively straightforward, although it is important to follow your doctor’s instructions to avoid more serious complications. You can expect some swelling and tenderness around the insertion site for a few days. Any discomfort is typically managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

You should feel comfortable returning to your regular routine within a day or so, and it is essential that you intentionally move and flex your legs to promote circulation. However, it is recommended you avoid more strenuous physical activities for about two weeks as your body heals. Some patients are advised to continue using compression socks or stockings for up to three weeks to promote proper blood flow and help your body reroute blood through nearby healthy veins. A follow-up visit will be scheduled after your treatment to evaluate your progress and determine if any further interventions are needed.

Laser Vein Treatment Results

Chuback Vein Center

You should be able to notice reduced or eliminated pain and the appearance of varicose or spider veins within six weeks of your EVLT procedure. However, full results can take up to six months to be realized, depending on the extent of your condition.

Once treated, targeted veins have been shown to remain closed permanently, although other veins can appear. The longevity of positive results depends on many factors — including your body’s genetics, diet and exercise, and lifestyle — so it is important that you follow your doctor’s recommendations closely to achieve optimal results.
